Asheville GreenWorks’ Haw Creek Trash Trout Returns, Thanks to Community Support
We’re excited to share some good news about Asheville GreenWorks’ latest environmental efforts, as featured in a recent Asheville Citizen Times article. After thieves damaged and stole parts of the original Trash Trout on Haw Creek, the Asheville community rallied to bring it back, with help from local business One World Brewing.
Now, the new Trash Trout is part of a statewide initiative to protect North Carolina waterways. In collaboration with Waterkeepers Carolina, 15 Trash Trout devices have been installed across rivers like the Swannanoa, Catawba, Waccamaw, and Haw rivers, capturing plastic waste and litter that harm wildlife and pollute our streams.
These devices work tirelessly to remove harmful plastics from the water, and since the program’s inception, it has collected over 4.4 tons of waste. It’s a crucial step toward keeping our rivers clean and preventing further contamination from microplastics.
